Stroke

Stroke is the loss of the blood supply to, or acute bleeding in the brain, causing damage.

Brain damage can result from a major stroke, but in a mild stroke little or no brain damage can occur.

  • Research indicates that eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by stroke by as much as 40%.
  • To prevent stroke, drink ginger tea throughout the day to prevent excessive blood clotting and help in poor circulation. It also reduces cholesterol.
  • Eating baked or broiled fish over fried ones is found to lower stroke risk. Omega-3 fatty acids which is more in baked or broiled fish can be good for blood vessels, blood pressure and inflammation. Tuna, salmon, herring, mackerel and anchovies have particularly higher omega-3 fatty acid content.
  • A US study involving 43,732 men shows that men whose diet is rich in folic acid have a significantly lower risk of the most common type of stroke. Foods that are rich in folic acid: spinach, fortified breakfast cereals, lentils, asparagus, orange juice, and fortified pasta, rice, and wheat bread. Take 400 micrograms per day in supplement form.
  • To prevent stroke, drink 2 cups ginkgo biloba tea daily to increase blood flow to the brain.
